the two poles of Soviet montage: the *organic* (the spiral/growth, the set of any-instant-whatevers) and the *pathetic* (the qualitative leap/shock, the genesis of the new); the pathetic presupposes the organic.

On screen: organic = accumulating growth/spiral; pathetic = the shock-collision producing a new quality.
