Sing, Lola, Sing!

2023 · Paloma Castro

Jovany Magaña is a method actress and the great mind behind the show 'Los lamentos de Lola la Extra Grande', an independent show presented thanks to the company Talavera Cabaret. Through regional Mexican song, we explore the stages of grief after a breakup; We hear the memories of Jovany and the people closest to her in her ordeal to heal her broken heart; and through mezcal, we question the toxic idea of romantic love that an entire generation of dreamers has grown up with.

A heartbreak anatomized in regional Mexican song. Paloma Castro's scrappy independent hybrid — part documentary portrait, part filmed cabaret — centers on Jovany Magaña, a method actress whose stage creation, Lola la Extra Grande, becomes the vessel for working through the stages of grief after a breakup. Mounted with the Talavera Cabaret company on evidently minimal means, the film moves between performance and confession: numbers from the show, memories recounted by Jovany and the people who watched her come apart, and mezcal-loosened testimony that keeps blurring the line between the woman and the character built to survive her. What it lacks in polish it makes up in candor about how much labor healing actually takes, and in its faith in an old national tradition — the cantina, the ranchera, grief made loud and public rather than swallowed. The cabaret has always known what the film gently demonstrates: that the border between performing an emotion and living through it is the thinnest curtain on the stage.
