Cinematography

Janusz Kamiński, Spielberg's regular cinematographer since Schindler's List, shot the film and is central to its uncanny atmosphere. He works in a high-contrast, often clinical register — cold blue-white light in the domestic and laboratory scenes, hard reflective surfaces, and a glassy precision that deliberately evokes Kubrick's own visual rigor. The Flesh Fair and Rouge City sequences shift to a garish, saturated palette of neon and firelight, while the frozen, submerged future is rendered in pale, mournful tones. Kamiński frequently shoots David in symmetrical, frontal compositions and through frames, glass, and reflections, emphasizing his manufactured perfection and his entrapment. The film's look is consciously colder and more controlled than typical Spielberg, an aesthetic homage to the absent Kubrick that nonetheless retains Spielberg's instinct for the expressive, emotionally charged image.

Editing

Michael Kahn, Spielberg's career-long editor, cut the film. Its rhythm is unusually patient and episodic for a Spielberg picture, organized as a journey through discrete worlds rather than as a propulsive narrative. The pacing tolerates long, contemplative passages — David's submerged vigil before the Blue Fairy statue is held for what feels like an eternity — and the editing's willingness to dwell, to let melancholy accumulate, is part of what unsettled audiences expecting conventional momentum. John Williams's score is among his most restrained and modernist for Spielberg, eschewing soaring leitmotif for ethereal, sometimes dissonant textures — wordless voices, shimmering strings, and passages of genuine strangeness that underscore the film's emotional ambivalence rather than resolving it. The film rests on Haley Joel Osment, then at the height of his child stardom after The Sixth Sense, who delivers a performance of extraordinary control. His David is built from withheld blinks, unnatural stillness, and sudden, almost frightening surges of programmed affect; the achievement is to make a non-human child both deeply sympathetic and persistently uncanny. Jude Law is a striking foil as Gigolo Joe, a sex-mecha whose stylized movements, fixed grin, and music-hall patter give the film's middle section its energy and its sly commentary on machines built to perform human desire. Frances O'Connor as the mother Monica grounds the domestic tragedy, her abandonment of David in the woods one of the film's most wrenching scenes. William Hurt appears as the robot's creator, Professor Hobby, and Brendan Gleeson as the Flesh Fair's showman; a brief Chris Rock cameo registers among the destroyed robots.
