The New Gothic
Watch these together as a run of family secrets and haunted houses on fog-bound islands and in rotting mansions, where the ghost or monster usually turns out to be a story about guilt that someone has buried.
Mostly well-loved, approachable genre films, with del Toro and Amenábar as the shared reference points and a few underseen and international gems for those who want to go deeper. They're atmospheric rather than gruelling, but several end on real grief or real gore.
