Destin Daniel Cretton spent years working in a group home for at-risk teenagers before making films, and it shows in every frame of this drama set in a short-term foster-care facility, expanded from his prize-winning short. Brie Larson plays Grace, a line-staff supervisor whose gift for de-escalating other people's crises is inseparable from her refusal to face her own; the arrival of a guarded new resident begins to pry her open. The handheld camera stays at eye level with the kids, and the film's signature move is the story-within-a-story — a rap performed in a bedroom, an illustrated fable read aloud — moments where characters can only tell the truth sideways. It never begs for tears; it earns them through procedure, the daily choreography of intake forms, chase protocols and birthday cupcakes. In hindsight the cast list reads like a prophecy: Larson before her Oscar, LaKeith Stanfield in his screen debut (reprising his role from the short), Rami Malek, Kaitlyn Dever and John Gallagher Jr., all caught at the moment just before the industry noticed them.
