Rio de Janeiro, 1971: a sun-flooded beach house, five children, an ex-congressman father — and then the knock at the door that Brazil's military dictatorship delivered to thousands of families. Walter Salles, the director of Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries, knew the real Paiva household as a teenager, and that intimacy shapes everything: the film's first movement is almost pure domestic texture, volleyball and Super 8 footage and records on the turntable, so that what follows registers as the violation of a world we have come to inhabit. Fernanda Torres, as Eunice Paiva, gives a performance of extraordinary containment — a woman who understands that her composure is itself a form of resistance — and her mother Fernanda Montenegro, Salles's Central Station star, appears in a late passage that folds two generations of Brazilian screen history into one face. A phenomenon at home, where it reopened a national reckoning with the dictatorship's unpunished crimes, it became the first Brazilian film to win the Academy Award for Best International Feature. Salles ends not on grief but on memory's stubbornness: a family that insists on smiling for the camera.
