Love as a Wrecking Ball

Watch these when you want desire pushed all the way to self-destruction — affairs and infatuations that leave nothing standing.

A mix of art-house canon (Breathless), a maximalist crowd-pleaser (Moulin Rouge!), and two adult dramas of betrayal; more emotionally demanding than formally difficult, and best saved for when you're up for heartbreak.

• Dangerous Liaisons (1988) — The overlooked one that rhymes hardest with Closer — seduction played as a cruel game until Valmont's real feeling for Tourvel arrives too late and takes down everyone at the table, love weaponized then turned suicidal.
• Room at the Top (1958) — If Damage landed, this is the under-seen British one to finally pull down — Joe Lampton's affair with an older married woman is the thing he sacrifices for ambition, and its collapse leaves a corpse and a hollow man where the desire used to be.
• Sid and Nancy (1986) — The forgotten gem that is love-as-wrecking-ball in its purest, ugliest form — Sid and Nancy's codependent, heroin-fed infatuation is a mutual demolition that ends with her dead and him not far behind.
• Moulin Rouge (1952) — The other Moulin Rouge sitting on your list — Huston's 1952 Toulouse-Lautrec, where romantic rejection and self-loathing drink a brilliant man to death, the tragic underside of the 2001 film's spectacle.
