Watch these when you want the unease of something watching, following or repeating that the film never fully explains; they rhyme on doubles, tapes, curses and omens that leave the mystery open.

It starts with It Follows, a horror crowd favourite, and moves through film-school puzzles like Caché and Enemy into Lynch's three-hour Inland Empire and the near-abstract Skinamarink. Patience pays off, but don't expect answers.
