It arrived in 2019 trailing genuine moral panic — op-eds fretting about copycat violence, theaters adding security — then won the Golden Lion at Venice, made a billion dollars, and got Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar. Today the panic looks overblown and the debate has settled into a quieter question of whether the film itself was ever as dangerous, or as deep, as everyone claimed.
