How to watch Tuner

2026 · Daniel Roher · Tuner on Sightlines

5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 4 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.

On a first viewing

  1. Listen for ordinary noise turning sharp and painful. (sound)

Johnnie Burn builds Niki's hearing from the inside: sudden shifts of volume and texture make a street or a room feel invasive, and there is no whoosh to announce it, only pain, protection and attention.

Payoff: You are put inside a damaged ear; the gift and the wound are the same organ, and you hear both.

  2. Watch Woodall's face while Niki listens. (performance)

The role is stillness with occupation: a man whose main action is listening, kept dramatically alive while doing almost nothing. Roher says his job was to stay out of Woodall's way; critics found him somber, and vulnerable opposite Liu.

Payoff: Attention is the performance; what he hears has to show on a face that barely moves.

  3. Look at the inside of the piano. (setting)

The design logic runs on two sealed objects: the piano, a machine of felt, wire and tension that Niki opens for a living, and the safe, which the film cannot show while it matters.

Payoff: One box you get to see inside and one you never do; the craft is the same, only the object changes.

  4. Notice the rooms Niki is let into alone. (staging)

A tuner is invited in and left for hours with a grand piano, in homes wealthy enough to own one. Roher stages him as the trusted intruder, in the line of The Servant, La Cérémonie and Parasite.

Payoff: Class is in the blocking, not the dialogue: who gets admitted, and who gets left alone with what.

  5. Watch the film alternate between the romance and the safes. (cutting)

O'Bryant cuts montages of Niki and Ruthie against Niki's safecracking outings, a double helix that carries the momentum; the fast montages apply Ocean's-style velocity to mundane working activity.

Payoff: The cut treats work and love at the same speed, so you feel how one feeds the other.

The 4 rewatch keys open on this page when you choose "Seen it?".

Carry this in: Listen before you look. Burn mixes every room from inside Niki's ear, and what hurts him is the story.
