It premiered at Telluride in August 2025 to the kind of reviews that mint a star, Variety saying it felt like "the discovery of the Telluride Film Festival", and landed at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes (matched by a 94% audience score) against a milder 75 on Metacritic. A quiet theatrical run of $14.5 million on a $7 million budget got a second act in September 2026, when it hit Paramount+ and shot to #1 on the service in the US.

What’s debated

The fight is over the genre cocktail: admirers say the romcom-crime-drama blend foams over with warmth and wit, while Empire argued it can't pull off every genre it attempts, the Irish Times found the plot overheating late, and Time Out filed it as a pleasant light diversion rather than a masterpiece.

Its footprint

The talking points are Leo Woodall, whom Rotten Tomatoes' consensus anoints a compelling star talent and Time Out called his best screen work yet, and 88-year-old Dustin Hoffman, whose timing the Irish Times judged as sharp as in The Graduate. Its streaming chart run, topping Paramount+ in the US ahead of The Hangover and 21 Jump Street, became the afterlife story.

Where it stands

Early days, but it already has a Vancouver Film Critics Circle prize for Best Screenplay for a Canadian Film and a spot in TIFF's Canada's Top Ten, and it marks Daniel Roher's successful pivot from Oscar-winning documentary (Navalny) to narrative features.

Did you know? Roher got the idea after meeting a piano tuner in Los Angeles while traveling with his future wife, had an epiphany connecting tuning to safecracking, and has said the film grew out of his post-Oscar creative depression, asking who you become when you can no longer do the thing that makes you you.

• The Conversation (1974) — Roher cited Coppola's film as a model for the kind of sound-forward cinema he wanted Tuner to be.
• Blow Out (1981) — Named by Roher among the great 'sound movies' he drew on, where sound is as important as a character.
• Sound of Metal (2019) — Roher pointed to Darius Marder's film as a recent touchstone for making the audience hear the movie as much as see it.
