How to watch Smile 2
2024 · Parker Finn · Smile 2 on Sightlines
4 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 2 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.
On a first viewing
Notice the empty space left at the edges of wide shots. (camera)
Charlie Sarroff composes wide, symmetrical frames with unsettling negative space at the borders, training you to scan the edges rather than follow Skye.
Payoff: You end up patrolling the frame's corners instead of watching the story.
Watch the horizon slowly tip until the frame inverts. (camera)
The camera performs a slow, motion-controlled rotation until the world hangs upside down, executed on rigs rather than handheld, so the vertigo feels mechanical rather than personal.
Payoff: The unease belongs to the camera itself, not just to what Skye is feeling. In the reading: out-of-field-absolute. Deleuze calls a threat with no locatable address an absolute out-of-field, and this entity is never somewhere you could point to.
Watch how long the camera holds on Scott's breakdowns. (performance)
Naomi Scott performs extended, unbroken collapses that the camera refuses to cut away from, holding both manufactured pop radiance and raw panic in the same shot.
Payoff: Staying on her face this long is its own kind of pressure.
Listen for pop music sliding into pure dread. (sound)
Cristobal Tapia de Veer's score blurs the line between the polished pop Skye is recording and the abrasive noise the entity makes, using volume itself as a weapon.
Payoff: You often can't tell which side of the screen a sound is coming from.
Once you have seen it
Notice hallucination and reality get cut together without any seam. (cutting)
Elliot Greenberg splices imagined and real footage so smoothly that 'none of that happened' lands as a jolt rather than an explanation, again and again.
Payoff: Each reveal only tells you the next stretch can't be trusted either. In the reading: hyalosign. Deleuze calls an actual moment and its imagined double swapped until indistinguishable a crystal-image, and the editing builds one constantly.
Watch the backup dancers fold into the curse's choreography. (staging)
A pop performance built on counted, industry-arranged movement turns against the person it was built around, the possession staged in the vocabulary of a music video.
Payoff: A dance built to display her gets turned into a display of losing control. In the reading: the-gest. Deleuze calls a posture that displays a social arrangement a gest, and the choreography here curdles from gest into threat.
Carry this in: Watch the horizon line, and the second it starts to move.
