Critics in 2004 were split — many found Tony Scott's hyper-caffeinated editing and floating subtitles exhausting, even as audiences turned it into a solid hit. Since Scott's death in 2012 it's been thoroughly reappraised, becoming a centerpiece of the 'vulgar auteurism' case for late Tony Scott as a genuine stylist rather than a vandal.

The eternal fight is over the style itself: is the strobing, over-cranked, subtitle-splattered filmmaking expressive genius or an assault on the material — and would the story have hit harder played straight?
Its footprint
Creasy's 'Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting' is one of the most-quoted action lines of the 2000s, and the film is the acknowledged blueprint for the whole dad-on-a-rampage cycle that Taken later mainstreamed. Christopher Walken's 'Creasy's art is death — he's about to paint his masterpiece' monologue gets endlessly recirculated too.

Did you know? Tony Scott tried to make this film in the 1980s, right after The Hunger, but the studio passed on him as director — the novel was adapted by someone else in 1987, and Scott finally got his version made almost two decades later.
