Disney thought it was too weird and scary for the family brand in 1993, so it went out under the Touchstone label to modest box office — three decades later Disney has fully reclaimed it, with annual re-releases, a Disneyland Haunted Mansion takeover every fall, and merch empires built on Jack's face.
What’s debated
The eternal fan fight: is it a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie — with a side skirmish over the title card, since it's marketed as 'Tim Burton's' but Henry Selick actually directed it and has pointedly reminded people of that.
Its footprint
Jack Skellington's pinstriped grin became the unofficial logo of mall-goth culture — a Hot Topic staple, a tattoo classic — while Danny Elfman's 'This Is Halloween' and 'What's This?' resurface every October like clockwork.
Where it stands
