Booed-adjacent at Cannes and a box-office flop in 1995 — Roger Ebert famously trashed it — while Jonathan Rosenbaum hailed it as an 'acid western' masterpiece; Rosenbaum won. It's now widely regarded as Jarmusch's peak and one of the great American films of the '90s.

Its footprint
Neil Young's improvised feedback-drenched guitar score is as famous as the film itself, and Gary Farmer's exasperated 'stupid white man' line became the film's signature — he even reprised his character Nobody in Jarmusch's Ghost Dog. It also cemented 'acid western' as a genre label.
