A massive hit in Japan on release (Shinkai's third straight film past the ¥10-billion mark), it was first received as 'more Shinkai formula' — but is increasingly read as the serious capstone of his disaster trilogy, the one where he finally confronted the 2011 earthquake head-on.

Its footprint

The three-legged chair became instant meme material, and the film was a genuine phenomenon abroad — it broke records in China to become (at the time) the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released there.
