In 2006 it did solid business and got respectful-but-wary reviews — plenty of critics side-eyed Verhoeven for turning WWII resistance drama into a lurid pulp thriller. Now, with the great Verhoeven reappraisal in full swing, it's routinely called one of his very best and one of the standout European films of the 2000s.
What’s debated
The perennial fight: is its trashy-thriller treatment of wartime moral collapse tasteless exploitation, or exactly the point — Verhoeven refusing to let anyone, resistance included, be a clean hero?
Its footprint
It's the film that launched Carice van Houten internationally — Game of Thrones fans know her as Melisandre, but cinephiles will tell you this is the performance. It also marked Verhoeven's much-discussed homecoming to the Netherlands after two decades of Hollywood.
Where it stands
A canon climber and a Letterboxd favorite — the standard 'actually his masterpiece' pick for Verhoeven heads who want to go beyond RoboCop and Starship Troopers.
Did you know? It was the most expensive Dutch film ever made at the time, and in 2008 the Dutch public voted it the best Dutch film of all time — Verhoeven and co-writer Gerard Soeteman had been developing the material for roughly two decades.
