The arc

Acclaimed from the start — it took India's President's Gold Medal and the Sutherland Trophy — though some Bengali critics sniped at it, prompting Ray to publish a written defence. Today it's routinely called the emotional peak of the Apu Trilogy, and the 2015 4K restoration brought a whole new generation to it.

What's debated

The eternal trilogy debate: is Pather Panchali the masterpiece and this the coda, or is The World of Apu actually the richest, most complete film of the three?

Its footprint

It's the capstone of the trilogy that made Kurosawa say never seeing Ray's cinema is like 'existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon' — and the tender newlywed scenes between Apu and Aparna are endlessly cited as one of cinema's great portraits of a marriage.

Where it stands

A permanent 'you must see the trilogy' fixture — Criterion crown jewel, Sight & Sound regular, and for many cinephiles the entry point to all of Indian cinema.

★ Did you know? It's the screen debut of BOTH leads: Soumitra Chatterjee, who went on to make fourteen films with Ray as his on-screen alter ego, and Sharmila Tagore, who was just fourteen when she played Aparna. The trilogy's original negatives were later badly burned in a 1993 London lab fire, and the 2015 restoration was painstakingly rebuilt partly from the charred reels.
