Film fans still argue over whether Shrek's snarky, pop-song-and-reference style saved animation from Disney formula or 'ruined' a generation of it — and whether it really deserved that Oscar over Monsters, Inc.

Its footprint

All Star, 'ogres are like onions,' and 'Shrek is love, Shrek is life' — few films have a denser meme afterlife, from crowd-sourced Shrek Retold remakes to Smash Mouth becoming permanently fused to the movie.

Where it stands

A rare beast: a mass-market family hit that became a Letterboxd in-joke, a genuine ironic-turned-sincere cult object, and a certified 'everyone has seen this' touchstone.

★ Did you know? Chris Farley was the original voice of Shrek and had recorded most of his dialogue before his death in 1997; Mike Myers took over and, partway through production, asked to redo the entire performance in a Scottish accent — a re-record that reportedly cost millions.
