The arc

Opened big in summer 2022 but split audiences — plenty walked out asking 'what was that about?' and called it lesser Peele. Four years on it's the one cinephiles increasingly call his best, a spectacle-about-spectacle that keeps climbing in esteem.

What's debated

The forever fight: is the Gordy the chimp subplot a haunting thematic masterstroke or a dangling thread that never connects — and is Nope Peele's messiest film or his most ambitious?

Its footprint

The title is the joke that ate the culture — it canonised the thing horror audiences yell at the screen, and 'NOPE' became the universal caption for backing away from anything. The one-eyed cloud hanging over the ranch is instantly memeable poster imagery.

Influences Jordan Peele has publicly named — the director's own word, distinct from the inferred lines of influence.

• Jaws (1975) — Peele repeatedly cited it as the model for building dread around a barely-glimpsed creature and making a monster movie into an event.
• Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) — Peele named it as the great UFO-in-the-sky touchstone he was writing toward — awe and terror aimed at the clouds.
• King Kong (1933) — Peele cited it for the idea of spectacle built on a captured, exploited animal — the theme at the heart of Nope.
• Signs (2002) — Peele pointed to it as a key influence on staging alien menace from an isolated family homestead.
• Steven Spielberg — Peele openly framed Nope as his run at the Spielbergian summer blockbuster — spectacle with dread underneath.
