How When Evil Lurks has been received, argued over, and remembered.
No slow burn here — it detonated out of TIFF's Midnight Madness in 2023, hit Shudder, and was almost instantly crowned one of the decade's great horror films; three years on it's already treated as a modern classic rather than a recent release.
The perennial fight is whether its cruelest moments are fearless 'no one is safe' filmmaking or shock for shock's sake — with a side debate over whether the characters' rule-breaking is maddening or exactly the point.
It's become horror fans' go-to shorthand for 'this movie actually goes there' — THAT scene (dog owners know) is invoked constantly as a warning, and 'the Rotten' entered the possession-movie vocabulary.
A Letterboxd horror darling and fixture of 'most disturbing films' and best-of-2023 lists — the current 'you must see this, but I can't tell you why' recommendation.
