On a first viewing
Notice the shots looking straight down into the apartment. (camera)
Garbett keeps returning to an overhead framing that turns the family's rooms into a maze seen from above. The film opens and closes on aerial views of the world outside it.
Payoff: From that height a home reads as a floor plan with people trapped in it. You are given the layout of the trap before anyone is caught in it.
Count the doors, stairwells, and locked thresholds in each scene. (staging)
This is the first Evil Dead film with no woods. Cronin works the vertical geometry of a condemned Los Angeles block instead: corridors, a cramped elevator, a peephole, chains on the inside of a door.
Payoff: Every architectural feature of an ordinary building is converted into a suspense device. The place people live becomes the reason they cannot leave.
Listen for the possessed voice imitating a mother's affection. (sound)
The layered guttural Deadite voice has been a franchise signature since 1981. Here it is aimed at children, and its favorite weapon is the sound of tenderness coming out of the wrong thing.
Payoff: The cruelest effect in the film is aural. A familiar voice keeps offering comfort, and accepting it is what gets people killed.
Look at the cracks the tremor opens in the building. (setting)
An earthquake splits the parking garage and exposes a hidden bank vault under the block. The records and the Book of the Dead come up from there, out of the ground the apartments are standing on.
Payoff: The title works on the architecture. What destroys this family was buried beneath their own home and rises through it.
Watch the lakeside opening before the main story starts. (structure)
Shaw frames the film with a cold open at a lake, nodding to the woods the series came from. The body of the film then runs as the night before that scene.
Payoff: You are shown the aftermath first. Everything that follows is weighted by your knowing roughly where the night is headed.
Once you have seen it
Watch Sutherland's face in the scenes before anything happens. (performance)
Ellie is played as an exhausted single mother holding a household together. Sutherland builds the warmth carefully so that the sing-song malevolence later has something specific to desecrate.
Payoff: The performance has to earn the family before it can ruin it. Her first-act tiredness is what makes the possession land as a loss.
Track the phonograph records the kids carry up from the vault. (setting)
Priests recorded the incantations onto vinyl, which replaces the franchise's usual tape machine. The crackle and warp of those grooves is the summoning device, and the film keeps letting you hear them.
Payoff: The mechanism is a medium rather than a monster. Someone playing a record is what sets everything in motion, exactly as in 1981.
Time the quiet stretches before each burst of violence. (cutting)
Cronin stalks patiently, letting possession spread across long, low scenes, then cuts abruptly into frenetic gore. He does not imitate Raimi's roving camera. He borrows the alternation.
Payoff: The rhythm is what makes the extremity tolerable. You get recovery time, and then the film spends it all at once.
Look at what gets used as a weapon in the kitchen. (setting)
The franchise's practical-effects ethos means household objects do the damage, built and shot for real. The cheese grater became the film's signature entirely on this basis.
Payoff: Domestic tools turned lethal is the oldest Evil Dead joke. It works because you own these objects and know exactly how they feel.
