The arc

A smash on release in 1940, it turned Cantinflas from a carpa (tent-show) comic into Mexico's biggest movie star — and it's never really fallen: it's still routinely cited as the best Mexican comedy of the Golden Age, and often as Cantinflas's one indispensable film.

What's debated

The perennial fan debate is whether Cantinflas's rapid-fire double-talk can survive subtitles at all — Spanish speakers call this untouchable, while non-Spanish speakers on Letterboxd often admit they can tell something brilliant is happening just out of reach.

Its footprint

The title phrase — 'ahí está el detalle' — became Cantinflas's lifelong catchphrase and everyday Mexican Spanish, and the verbal style showcased here gave the language a whole verb: 'cantinflear,' to talk endlessly while saying nothing, eventually enshrined by the Real Academia Española.
