How Censor was received

2021 · Prano Bailey-Bond · Censor on Sightlines

The arc

It premiered in Sundance's Midnight section in 2021 to strong reviews and quickly became a standout of that year's indie horror. Since then it has settled in as a cult favourite, and Prano Bailey-Bond's feature debut is often named as one of the sharpest British horror debuts of its decade.

What’s debated

Fans argue over whether the dreamlike, hard-left-turn final act is a bold payoff or a case of style outrunning story.

Its footprint

It brought the 1980s British 'video nasties' moral panic back into conversation for a new generation, and its scuzzy VHS-era look became a reference point for retro-horror aesthetics.

Where it stands

It's a cult object in the making and a regular pick on Letterboxd lists of modern folk-and-analog horror and great debut features.

Did you know? The feature grew out of Bailey-Bond's 2015 short 'Nasty,' which also dug into the world of banned VHS horror tapes.
