Premiered at Sundance 2020 to warm buzz, then COVID buried it — it sat without a proper release for two years while word of mouth quietly built, so by its 2022 arrival it was already a cult object fans felt they'd personally rescued.

The perennial fight is whether it's the most criminally underseen rom-com of the decade or a Letterboxd-hype darling whose abrasive, edgelord-ish opening stretch is a dealbreaker some viewers never get past.
Its footprint
The homemade punk song 'Watermelon' is the film's calling card — endlessly quoted, covered, and clipped, it's shorthand among fans for the whole movie's scuzzy-sweet appeal, and the film did a lot to cement Kyle Gallner's 'internet's favourite character actor' status.
