In 1994 it was a hit but a lightning rod — Anne Rice loudly trashed the Tom Cruise casting sight unseen, and Oprah walked out of a screening saying it was too dark. Three decades on it's been reclaimed as a lush queer-gothic classic, a reappraisal turbocharged by the 2022 AMC series sending fans back to the source.
What’s debated
The forever-debate is the queerness: is the film a landmark of homoerotic cinema or a frustrating case of subtext that never becomes text — with Cruise's Lestat either a miracle of against-type casting or the compromise that held it back.
Its footprint
