No reappraisal arc needed — it was consecrated on arrival, winning Ford his second Best Director Oscar and Jane Darwell one for Ma Joad, and it's never really left the canon. If anything the modern shift is viewers noticing how much gentler and more hopeful it is than Steinbeck's furious novel.

Tom Joad's 'I'll be there' speech escaped the movie entirely — Woody Guthrie turned it into the ballad 'Tom Joad' in 1940, Springsteen answered with 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' decades later, and Rage Against the Machine covered that. Few American films have a longer musical afterlife.
