The arc
No reappraisal arc needed — it was consecrated on arrival, winning Ford his second Best Director Oscar and Jane Darwell one for Ma Joad, and it's never really left the canon. If anything the modern shift is viewers noticing how much gentler and more hopeful it is than Steinbeck's furious novel.
What’s debated
The perennial fight: is the studio-softened, uplift-tinged ending a betrayal of Steinbeck's radicalism, or does Ford's sentiment plus Gregg Toland's imagery transcend it?
Its footprint
Tom Joad's 'I'll be there' speech escaped the movie entirely — Woody Guthrie turned it into the ballad 'Tom Joad' in 1940, Springsteen answered with 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' decades later, and Rage Against the Machine covered that. Few American films have a longer musical afterlife.
Where it stands
Bedrock American canon — a film-school and 'you must have seen this' staple, and the standard exhibit for Ford-beyond-Westerns.
Did you know? Producer Darryl Zanuck, worried Steinbeck had exaggerated, sent investigators to the migrant camps before filming — they reported back that conditions were even worse than the novel described.
