The arc
A hit and a critical favourite from day one, Asuran skipped the reappraisal phase entirely — the 2021 National Awards (Best Tamil Film, plus Best Actor for Dhanush) simply rubber-stamped what audiences had already decided, and streaming carried it far beyond the Tamil-speaking world.
What's debated
Fans still argue over whether Asuran or Vada Chennai is peak Vetrimaaran, and over how its caste politics sit alongside the more explicitly assertive cinema of Pa. Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj.
Its footprint
The father's closing message — that land and money can be seized but an education never can — is quoted endlessly across Tamil social media, and G.V. Prakash Kumar's 'Ellu Vaya Pookalaye' became a phenomenon in its own right.
