Landed in late 2024 as a solid-but-divisive legacy sequel — big box office, decent reviews, but the instant consensus was that it lived in the original's shadow, with Denzel Washington's scene-stealing Macrinus as the one thing everyone agreed was great. Too young for a reappraisal yet; the 'Denzel was robbed of an Oscar nomination' grievance is already its defining afterlife.

What's debated

Is it a shameless beat-for-beat retread of the 2000 original that only Denzel's flamboyant villainy rescues — and should historical accuracy even matter when Ridley Scott clearly doesn't care?

Its footprint
