Did you know? Kim Bora grew the film out of her 2011 Columbia University thesis short 'The Recorder Exam', which follows the same young heroine, Eun-hee, drawn from Kim's own 1990s Seoul childhood.

Named by the director

• Yi Yi (2000) — Kim named Edward Yang's family epic as her key reference — she wanted one family's story to hold a whole society's history, and even used Yi Yi as the visual touchstone for the film's nighttime apartment-complex scenes.
