It premiered at Cannes 2021 to raves and a Jury Prize, then became less a movie than a pilgrimage: Neon's US release toured it one theater at a time with a pledge of no streaming or home video, so its reputation grew city by city, screening by screening.

Did you know? The film grew out of Apichatpong's own brush with exploding head syndrome — he began hearing a loud bang at dawn that no one else could hear, and he built the movie (his first shot outside Thailand, in Colombia, with Tilda Swinton) around that sound.
