Dropped quietly on Netflix in November 2019 and became a word-of-mouth phenomenon almost overnight — within a couple of Decembers it went from 'that new Netflix cartoon' to permanent fixture on the annual Christmas rewatch rotation and a rallying flag for the hand-drawn animation revival.
What's debated
The evergreen animation-fan grievance: Klaus losing the Best Animated Feature Oscar to Toy Story 4 is still trotted out as Exhibit A whenever people argue the Academy just reflexively votes Pixar/Disney.
Its footprint
It's become shorthand in the '2D animation isn't dead' discourse — the film people link when arguing hand-drawn could still look cutting-edge — and 'a true selfless act always sparks another' gets quoted every December.
