The arc
It premiered quietly at the 2018 Berlinale (winning the Caligari Prize) and lived on the festival circuit until its 2020 US release — championed loudly by Ari Aster — turned it into a word-of-mouth cult sensation among animation and horror fans.
What’s debated
The recurring fan debate is whether it plays as a self-contained nightmare or only fully lands once you know the real Colonia Dignidad history behind it — and whether it's a masterpiece or an art-installation endurance test.
Its footprint
Its constantly mutating, painted-on-the-walls imagery is endlessly clipped and gif'd as peak 'cursed animation'; the directors' style reached a much bigger audience when Ari Aster hired León and Cociña to create the animated sequence in Beau Is Afraid (2023).
Where it stands
A Letterboxd-era cult object — the standard answer whenever someone asks for the most disturbing animated film ever made.
Did you know? It took around five years to make, and much of it was animated in public: the production toured art galleries and museums as a live installation, with visitors watching the sets being painted and repainted.
