How American Gangster was received
2007 · Ridley Scott · American Gangster on Sightlines
The arc
Landed in 2007 as a respectable hit with two Oscar nominations, but critics kept grading it against The Godfather and The French Connection and finding it a notch below. It's since settled into something warmer: a rewatchable, endlessly-cabled crime epic that fans increasingly file under 'underrated Ridley Scott.'
What’s debated
The perennial fight is over truth: how much of Frank Lucas's story was embellished (former DEA agents publicly disputed the film's version of events), and whether the movie glamorizes a man it should be indicting.
Its footprint
Denzel's clipped 'My man.' escaped the film entirely and became a meme and everyday catchphrase, and Jay-Z was so taken with the movie he built his 2007 concept album American Gangster around it.
Where it stands
A dad-movie/crime-canon staple and reliable 'most underrated Denzel' pick — mid-tier Scott by reputation, top-tier rewatchability by consensus.
Did you know? Universal shut down an earlier version of the film — with Denzel Washington attached and Antoine Fuqua directing — just weeks before shooting in 2004, eating tens of millions in costs, before Ridley Scott resurrected it; Ruby Dee then earned an Oscar nomination for barely ten minutes of screen time.
