Black Widow · reception & legacy

2021 · Cate Shortland

How Black Widow has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

Landed in summer 2021 to a shrug — solid-enough reviews but a loud chorus of 'ten years too late,' arriving after the character's story had already ended in Endgame. It's since been reframed less as Natasha's send-off than as the start of Marvel's post-Endgame drift — and, more warmly, as the film that launched Florence Pugh's Yelena.

What's debated

The forever-debate: should this movie have existed a decade earlier, and did Pugh walk away with a film that was supposed to be Johansson's goodbye?

Its footprint

Yelena's merciless mockery of Natasha's hair-flip 'superhero landing' — 'you're a total poser' — became instant meme fodder, and her beloved vest ('it has a lot of pockets') got its own fandom afterlife.

Where it stands

On Letterboxd it lives as mid-table MCU — rarely anyone's favourite, but a mandatory stop for Yelena completists.

★ Did you know? Scarlett Johansson sued Disney over the film's simultaneous Disney+ Premier Access release, arguing it breached her contract and cut into her box-office-tied pay — the suit settled within months and reshaped how studios wrote streaming-era star deals.
