Acclaimed straight out of Cannes 1983 despite being, by its own director's account, only half a movie — and in the decades since it's climbed from 'tragic truncated project' to fixture on greatest-Spanish-films lists, often ranked right beside The Spirit of the Beehive.

What’s debated

The eternal El Sur debate: Erice always insisted the film is unfinished and mourned the unshot southern half, while a large camp of fans argues the amputation is exactly what makes it perfect — that the South is more powerful imagined than seen.

Its footprint

It's cinephile shorthand for 'the greatest unfinished film ever made' — the story of the producer pulling the plug mid-shoot is retold as often as the film is watched, and the father-daughter paso doble at the communion lunch is one of the most swooned-over scenes in Spanish cinema.

Where it stands

A 'you must see this' pillar of Spanish cinema and a quiet Letterboxd favorite, treasured all the more because Erice completed so few features that each one gets relic status.

Did you know? The older Estrella is played by a teenage Icíar Bollaín in her screen debut — she grew up to become one of Spain's most acclaimed directors, winning the Goya for Best Director with Take My Eyes (2003).
