How Retribution was received
2007 · Kiyoshi Kurosawa · Retribution on Sightlines
The arc
Arriving in 2006–07 as the J-horror wave was ebbing, it was largely shrugged off as minor Kurosawa outside festival circles — but as Cure and Pulse got canonised, Retribution has been reappraised as the haunted third panel of that loose Yakusho/ghost-detective triptych, and maybe the last great J-horror film.
What’s debated
The perennial Kurosawa-heads debate: is this a lesser retread of Cure, or the secretly-great one that only looks minor because Cure exists?
Its footprint
The ghost in the red dress — gliding, implacable, screaming — is one of those images Kurosawa fans pass around as proof that nobody stages a haunting like he does.
Where it stands
A cult object for Kurosawa completists and late-night Letterboxd horror lists — the 'if you loved Cure and Pulse, you owe it to yourself' recommendation.
Did you know? Retribution was made as part of producer Takashige Ichise's 'J-Horror Theater' series — Ichise being the producer behind Ringu and Ju-on — placing Kurosawa's art-ghost sensibility squarely inside the commercial J-horror machine.
