How to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
2022 · Sam Raimi · Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on Sightlines
5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 4 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.
On a first viewing
Watch for shots that arrive low and fast, ahead of anyone. (camera)
Raimi and cinematographer Mathieson repeatedly send the camera down corridors and toward threats before any character's point of view is established.
Payoff: The camera acts like it belongs to no one, an appetite rather than a person watching.
Notice the shift to high-contrast, shadow-heavy lighting at Wanda's mountain retreat. (light)
Mathieson lights the mirror dimension and Wanda's redoubt in deep gothic shadow, distinct from the first film's cleaner, symmetrical look.
Payoff: The lighting signals when the film shifts from superhero adventure into horror territory.
Listen for sub-bass stingers timed to sudden shocks throughout the film. (sound)
Sound design amplifies scares with concussive stingers and a whispering, crunching texture tied to the Darkhold's corruption.
Payoff: The sound tells you this is a horror film wearing a superhero budget.
Watch Cumberbatch's posture and voice shift across different versions of Strange. (performance)
Cumberbatch plays arrogant, corrupted, and reflective variants of the same man, distinguishing them through small physical and vocal choices.
Payoff: The multiverse turns one actor into a series of selves, none of them the "real" one.
Look for hands bursting from surfaces and bodies used as horror props. (staging)
Raimi repeatedly stages grotesque physical horror, a reanimated corpse, a witch advancing through rubble, favoring surprise over clean superhero blocking.
Payoff: These are Raimi's own horror signatures, carried intact into a franchise film.
Once you have seen it
Track how each variant Strange is treated as equally real, not ranked. (structure)
The film never designates an original Strange; corrupted, reflective, and arrogant versions all carry equal narrative weight, especially in the musical duel.
Payoff: Several presents happen at once, none a memory, none the draft the others revise. In the reading: peaks of present (series of time). The variant Stranges are peaks of present: contradictory presents happening at once, none subordinate to another.
Notice how little the Illuminati sequence explains why each face should matter. (staging)
The shock of the cameo sequence comes entirely from casting, not dialogue or staging; the film counts on your own memory of other movies to supply meaning.
Payoff: The scene works by anomaly, breaking the pattern years of Marvel films trained you to expect. In the reading: the mental-image (relation-image). Deleuze calls meaning that lives in the audience rather than the frame the relation-image; the cameos are pure relation-image.
Watch what happens when Wanda takes over another body in the dreamwalk. (staging)
The film never clarifies which version of Wanda, possessor or possessed, is the real one; both play as true at once.
Payoff: The thing and its reflection trade places too fast to separate. In the reading: hyalosign (crystal-image). The dreamwalk is a crystal-image: reality and reflection swap positions until neither can be called the original.
Watch Olsen's face for grief underneath the violence in Wanda's scenes. (performance)
Olsen plays Wanda's descent as loss rather than villainy, a woman walking toward children she imagined even as she destroys.
Payoff: Her performance keeps the human motive visible under the monster, the emotional engine of the film.
Carry this in: Watch the camera: notice it arrives low and fast before any character does.
