Cold War · reception & legacy

2018 · Paweł Pawlikowski

How Cold War has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

It arrived already garlanded — Best Director at Cannes 2018 and a genuinely surprising Best Director Oscar nomination for a black-and-white Polish film — and rather than being reappraised, it simply settled in as the modern doomed-romance touchstone people measure other love stories against.

What's debated

The perennial fight is over its ruthless 88-minute compression — whether the elliptical time-jumps are perfect romantic economy or leave you watching a great love story from behind glass.

Its footprint

The folk song 'Dwa serduszka' — heard mutating from village recording to state-ensemble showpiece to smoky Paris jazz — became the film's calling card, and the 'Rock Around the Clock' bar dance is one of the most gif'd and clipped scenes in recent arthouse cinema.

Where it stands

A fixture of Letterboxd's doomed-romance and 'best of the 2010s' lists — the arthouse heartbreak film you're assumed to have seen.

★ Did you know? Pawlikowski based the story on his own parents' stormy, decades-long, on-and-off relationship — the leads are named Wiktor and Zula after them, and the film is dedicated to his parents.
