No rescue arc needed — it won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1985 and was a genuine hit in France. But the 2010s Varda beatification (restorations, Criterion, her late-life icon status) pushed it from 'respected art film' to consensus masterpiece of her filmography.
What’s debated
The perennial fight is over Mona herself: is the film's refusal to explain or soften her its whole radical point, or does its deliberate coldness keep you locked out — and post-2020 it's constantly relitigated as the 'harder, better Nomadland.'
Its footprint
It's the touchstone for every drifter-woman film since — Wendy and Lucy and Nomadland discourse almost never happens without someone invoking it — and Mona trudging along the roadside with her pack is one of the defining images of 80s art cinema.
