In 1999 the headline was the cognitive dissonance: David Lynch making a G-rated Disney movie played like a lovely curveball. Since his death in January 2025 it's been fully reappraised as one of his most moving films — the 'sincere Lynch' people now hold up as the key to everything else he made.

What's debated

Fans still argue whether it's minor Lynch — the outlier without the nightmares — or secretly top-three Lynch, with a growing camp insisting the sincerity IS the radical move.

Its footprint

It lives on in the endlessly recycled joke that the most surreal thing Lynch ever did was make a normal movie — the Walt Disney Pictures logo in front of a David Lynch film is a meme unto itself.
