Tangled · reception & legacy

2010 · Nathan Greno

How Tangled has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

A solid hit and well-reviewed in 2010, Tangled was quickly overshadowed by Frozen three years later — but the internet has since flipped the script, and it's now routinely reappraised as the stealth best film of the Disney Revival.

What's debated

The eternal 'Tangled is better than Frozen' debate — fans endlessly relitigate which one deserved the cultural juggernaut status.

Its footprint

The lantern scene is one of the most-referenced romantic images in modern animation, Mother Gothel became the internet's go-to shorthand for gaslighting parents, and in March 2020 the film went viral as the movie that 'predicted' quarantine — Rapunzel is isolated in a tower away from the kingdom of Corona.

Where it stands

A Letterboxd comfort-classic and Disney Revival favourite — the one film buffs cite when arguing the Revival era peaked before Frozen.

★ Did you know? Disney changed the title from 'Rapunzel' to 'Tangled' — and reframed the marketing around Flynn Rider — after The Princess and the Frog underperformed, betting a princess-named title was scaring off boys; the switch was controversial enough to draw op-eds at the time.
