The arc
In 2010 it opened at #1 but got shrugged off as the also-ran to Despicable Me, which beat it to the villain-protagonist premise by four months. The internet has since flipped that verdict entirely — Megamind is now the standard-issue example of an 'unfairly overlooked' DreamWorks film.
What's debated
The eternal fan debate is Megamind vs. Despicable Me — which 2010 supervillain movie actually deserved the franchise — with Megamind partisans insisting the wrong one became a billion-dollar empire.
Its footprint
Few animated films have a richer meme afterlife: the 'No bitches?' image macro made Megamind a Gen-Z shitpost icon a decade after release, and his pronunciation of 'Metrocity' (rhymes with atrocity) is endlessly quoted.
Where it stands
A millennial/Gen-Z comfort classic and reliable Letterboxd 'underrated' pick — the kind of film whose defenders long ago outgrew the word cult.
