The arc

By the time Reiketsu landed in January 2017, fans had waited nearly seven years since the adaptation was first announced — so relief mixed with rapture. Since then the trilogy has only climbed, with Part 3 now routinely called the payoff and the best of the three, and the 2024 'Koyomi Vamp' recut brought a whole new wave of viewers to it.

What's debated

The forever-debate: is the trilogy's jaw-dropping craft undermined by its leering fanservice, or is the horniness inseparable from what Monogatari is — plus the eternal 'can you watch Kizu first, or must you sit through Bakemonogatari?' entry-point argument.

Its footprint

Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade — the name alone is a fandom in-joke, and her imagery is wallpaper-and-PFP canon across anime Twitter and Letterboxd. The trilogy is a go-to exhibit whenever anyone argues anime films can out-style live action.

Where it stands

A cult object turned canon-climber: within anime circles it's spoken of as Shaft's magnum opus, and Reiketsu is the 'trust me, the ending justifies the wait' film of the trilogy.
