★ Did you know? Director Kinji Fukasaku, 70 when he made it, said the story resonated with his own teens: at 15 he worked in a wartime munitions factory that came under artillery fire, and survivors had to dispose of their classmates' bodies. It was the last film he completed before his death in 2003.
