The arc

It swept into 2016 awards season as an instant juggernaut (a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations), then hit a fierce backlash as the 'safe' frontrunner against Moonlight — and the envelope fiasco froze that rivalry in amber. A decade on, the backlash-to-the-backlash has kicked in and it's increasingly owned, unironically, as a modern musical classic.

What's debated

The forever fight: is it a swooning masterpiece or an overrated pastiche — with side quarrels over the ending and over Gosling's Sebastian lecturing everyone about 'saving' jazz.

Its footprint

It's forever welded to the most infamous live-TV moment in Oscar history — wrongly announced as Best Picture before Moonlight — and 'La La Land/Moonlight' became shorthand for any botched announcement. Beyond that, the silhouetted dance against the purple twilight sky and 'City of Stars' are endlessly parodied and referenced.

• The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) — Chazelle repeatedly named Demy's candy-colored, bittersweet sung-through romance as the film's single biggest touchstone.
• The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) — He cited Demy's follow-up for its widescreen, sun-drenched ensemble numbers and jazz-inflected score.
• Singin' in the Rain (1952) — Chazelle pointed to it as the model for grounding big numbers in working-showbiz reality and pure movie-love.
• An American in Paris (1951) — He cited Minnelli's musical, especially its extended dream-ballet climax, as a direct reference point.
• Jacques Demy — Chazelle called Demy his guiding light for the whole project — the proof a musical could be candy-bright and heartbroken at once.
