How Phenomena was received
1985 · Dario Argento · Phenomena on Sightlines
The arc
Dismissed on release — and butchered for the US, where it was cut by nearly half an hour and retitled 'Creepers' — it's since been reclaimed as one of Argento's most beloved cult items, the weird fairy-tale outlier that fans now defend fiercely.
What’s debated
The eternal Phenomena fight is the soundtrack: whether dropping Iron Maiden and Motörhead into a dreamy Goblin-scored gothic is inspired delirium or the moment Argento's taste went off the rails.
Its footprint
Its DNA runs straight into video games — the survival-horror classic Clock Tower openly modeled its heroine Jennifer on Jennifer Connelly's character — and the image of Connelly in her school nightgown among the insects is one of the most reproduced in all of Italian horror.
Where it stands
A true cult object: the 'gateway Argento' for a generation of Letterboxd horror fans, and a required stop for anyone tracing Jennifer Connelly back before Labyrinth.
Did you know? Argento has repeatedly named Phenomena as his personal favorite of all his own films — and it stars a 14-year-old Jennifer Connelly, cast a year before Labyrinth made her famous.
