How Cruising was received
1980 · William Friedkin · Cruising on Sightlines
The arc
Picketed during production and savaged on release — gay activists protested it as homophobic, critics panned it, and it picked up Razzie nominations. Decades later it's been reclaimed, not least by queer cinephiles, as a fascinating, sleazy time capsule of New York's pre-AIDS leather scene.
What’s debated
The eternal fight: is it a homophobic artifact or an accidental queer documentary — with a side debate over what the famously ambiguous ending actually means.
Its footprint
Its mythology looms as large as the movie — the '40 lost minutes' Friedkin cut to dodge an X rating inspired James Franco and Travis Mathews' Interior. Leather Bar. (2013), and its leather-bar iconography keeps getting referenced in fashion and music video aesthetics.
Where it stands
A genuine cult object and Letterboxd provocation — the Friedkin deep cut people dare each other to have an opinion on.
Did you know? Gay rights activists protested the 1979 Greenwich Village shoot by blowing whistles and blasting noise from nearby rooftops to ruin the sound — so much of the film's dialogue had to be re-recorded in post.
