How Maniac was received

1980 · William Lustig · Maniac on Sightlines

The arc

Reviled on release — Gene Siskel famously walked out, and the film was picketed by protest groups over its violence against women — it's since been reclaimed as a cornerstone of NYC grindhouse horror, lovingly restored and reappraised as a grimy time capsule of pre-cleanup Times Square.

What’s debated

The eternal fight: irredeemable misogynist sleaze, or a genuinely despairing character study anchored by Joe Spinell's committed, sweaty performance?

Its footprint

Its leering poster — a killer's legs, a knife, a scalp, and the tagline 'I warned you not to go out tonight' — is one of the most infamous one-sheets in horror, and Tom Savini's gore effects are endlessly cited; the 2012 Elijah Wood remake brought a whole new audience back to the original.

Where it stands

A grindhouse canon essential and Letterboxd Halloween-season staple — the 'you must see this' entry for 42nd Street-era New York sleaze.

Did you know? Effects legend Tom Savini not only did the gore but appears onscreen as a victim — and the exploding head in his big scene was a plaster cast of Savini's own.
