It arrived as a Cannes Critics' Week discovery and a Criterion pick while still practically brand new — then spent the 2000s reframed as 'the original' after Christopher Nolan remade it, and is now cited as a forerunner of the whole Nordic noir wave.
What’s debated
The evergreen fight: is Skjoldbjærg's cold, morally murkier original better than Nolan's Pacino-led remake — with plenty of cinephiles insisting the 1997 version is the one you're supposed to prefer.
